I’m writing this from the US right now, as I prepare for a big adventure. I was asked to present an award for the best translation category at the first American Manga Awards, which are being held at the Japan Society next week in conjunction with the AnimeNYC convention.
The awards ceremony is limited to publishing industry folks, but I’ll also be giving a talk at AnimeNYC on Saturday, August 24th, at 4:30pm in Panel Room 2 of the Javits Center, where the convention is being held. Also on the panel are Zack Davisson and Matt Alt. We will be chatting about the role that yokai, monsters from folklore, play in Japanese society and global pop culture.
If you aren’t going to the convention, you can still come to see me at Kinokuniya Books at 6:00pm on Friday, August 23. I’m going to be doing a book signing of Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide and its sequels, together with Matt. Bring your copy, or purchase one on site! And we’ll be joined by our friend Fred Schodt, writer of many great books about Japan.
Good luck, wish you the very best!
Have fun! Good luck to you, Matt and Fred at the event. I enjoyed our session together back in summer 2022. https://jonmetzler.substack.com/p/manga-mania
